The ultimate aim of the coaches at smrac distance is to produce successful senior athletes, and junior athletes capable of becoming successful seniors. Our idea of a successful athlete is an athlete who is improving and achieving all they are capable of achieving.
We believe our aims are best met through a squad system which supports an encourages athletes of all ages. The squad system allows us to provide all the athletes with an appropriate mix of training stimuli in order to help them improve. We hope to keep training enjoyable but testing.
Middle and long distance athletics is a sport that requires a consistent, progressive approach. Those athletes that succeed as seniors are those who have a disciplined and consistent approach to their training. For that reason members of the group are encouraged to attend regularly rather than ‘drop in’ now and then.
We hope that athletes will want to progress from the Development Group to the Performance Group having experienced some success and decided to work hard to improve even further. Our squad system benefits these athletes as well as those who either enjoy training and racing but do no wish to make the step up, or who have not yet reached the required level. We can help everyone achieve what they want from the sport.

Brilliant results!
Thanks for all your encouragement Noel!
…and well done to Noel for coaching these guys and getting the best out of them! Great work Coach!
7 out of 7… and a mention for SMRAC
6 wins now!!
Excellent documentary! Shame he didn’t get to run at London.
UPDATE – U13/U15 races cancelled.
U17 and above still on.
Yes, still on at the moment. They will make a final decision on Friday morning but have invested in lots of space blankets. With the course set to be ok, I think they are most concerned about the temperature for officials stood out there all day.
Have heard through Stragglers that Surrey is definitely going ahead on Saturday. (for now at least).
February 2009’s Surrey league race was cancelled due to snow however I have been told that the cancellation of this race was by the council and that won’t recur as it has been agreed that they don’t have authority to cancel.
Kenya – Les coureurs du Siecle
I’m not an athletics book, but I still might buy it (if I knew what it was called).
Interesting read Noel and the 15,000 miles before 18th birthday reminds me of a Simon Lawson quote with regards to his high mileage, he doesn’t see why he ’should give Africans a ten year head start’.
Good to see you guys out in force and the podiums will be a good advert for the club.
I’ll be writing my report over the weekend, look out for it!
Good Luck,all of you!
The Old Deer Park meeting point is the section of grass at the top of the slope by the A316 and the swimming pool. The Twickenham Green meeting point is the corner of the green nearest the Prince Blucher pub.
Is the flag by the clubhouse where you meet?
Sorry we are on holiday I think Adam has told you but am just confirming
Many thanks
Jackie

Hi Ross – what a fantastic season you have had! I can’t believe I was running alongside you for a few metres back in the cold of Feb/March.
Keep at it – you can go alot quicker in the coming years.
Enjoy! And of course what a great coach you have!!
