We have a number of aims for the members of the Development Group
- train in smaller groups with people of a similar athletic age and ability
- be introduced to middle/long distance training
- develop key skills to fully utilise speed
- start to develop aerobic fitness and endurance
- enjoy training and racing
WHO
- the default group for most new members of smrac distance
- athletes not qualified for, or not wanting to be in the Performance Group
- U13s to Over 80s, male and female
WHEN
Tuesday (subject to help – see below)
- Grass sessions – 18:00 meet, 18:15 start warm up
- Track sessions – 18:15 meet, 18:30 start warm up
Saturday – 9:45 meet, 10:00 warm up starts
Punctuality is important. If you’re not on time you may not be able to join in so if you rely on public transport give yourself plenty of time to get to training!
WHERE
The location of training varies from week to week. The latest information can always be accessed from the Training News section of the website. If you don’t know where a particular venue is, check the Venues page for maps and transport information.
COACHES AND HELP
Training is set by Noel and is designed to provide a pathway to the Performance Group. For Tuesday’s Development Group sessions to take place at least two volunteers must sign up to help each week. These helpers need to hold a stop watch, help the session run smoothly, encourage the athletes and ensure everyone is safe. No previous experience is required but the club can pay for coaching courses – many of which are one day courses – for anyone wanting to make a regular commitment.

Brilliant results!
Thanks for all your encouragement Noel!
…and well done to Noel for coaching these guys and getting the best out of them! Great work Coach!
7 out of 7… and a mention for SMRAC
6 wins now!!
Excellent documentary! Shame he didn’t get to run at London.
UPDATE – U13/U15 races cancelled.
U17 and above still on.
Yes, still on at the moment. They will make a final decision on Friday morning but have invested in lots of space blankets. With the course set to be ok, I think they are most concerned about the temperature for officials stood out there all day.
Have heard through Stragglers that Surrey is definitely going ahead on Saturday. (for now at least).
February 2009’s Surrey league race was cancelled due to snow however I have been told that the cancellation of this race was by the council and that won’t recur as it has been agreed that they don’t have authority to cancel.
Kenya – Les coureurs du Siecle
I’m not an athletics book, but I still might buy it (if I knew what it was called).
Interesting read Noel and the 15,000 miles before 18th birthday reminds me of a Simon Lawson quote with regards to his high mileage, he doesn’t see why he ’should give Africans a ten year head start’.
Good to see you guys out in force and the podiums will be a good advert for the club.
I’ll be writing my report over the weekend, look out for it!
Good Luck,all of you!
The Old Deer Park meeting point is the section of grass at the top of the slope by the A316 and the swimming pool. The Twickenham Green meeting point is the corner of the green nearest the Prince Blucher pub.
Is the flag by the clubhouse where you meet?
Sorry we are on holiday I think Adam has told you but am just confirming
Many thanks
Jackie

Brilliant everyone!!
Hi Ross – what a fantastic season you have had! I can’t believe I was running alongside you for a few metres back in the cold of Feb/March.
Keep at it – you can go alot quicker in the coming years.
Enjoy! And of course what a great coach you have!!
cheers
Ian
