Feature Quote 1 – William Mutwol
The first in a semi-regular news item drawing your attention to quotes from within the squad, within the sport, or somewhere else completely that seem to have relevance to what we're trying to do at smrac distance.....
This quote comes from an article in a Kenyan Newspaper looking at the phenomenal number of successful steeplechasers from a small village in the Marakwet District of the country.
"Our cultural values uphold high discipline, which counts more than the talent." - William Mutwol, Olympic Bronze Medallist from 1992
I couldn't think of another quote that sums up more simply what is needed to succeed in distance running. Discipline is key. Being disciplined in carrying out conditioning work each week, being disciplined in being organised and balancing the demands of friends, school or work with training, being disciplined and completing sessions in the way your coach has instructed you, showing discipline in running easy on easy days... all of these things are key.
In the long term, talent counts for very little when it comes to being a successful athlete. As Mutwol says, consistently applied discipline counts for far more.
